- If you have a square or rectangular lawn, measuring its area is easy. Simply multiply the width and length. This will give you the area.
- Some lawns are more difficult to measure than others. People are becoming increasingly interested in the design of their gardens, and irregular shapes are becoming increasingly popular. You can measure a shape if it is relatively simple and made up of squares or rectangles, as shown in the diagram below.
3. If your lawn is more complex than that, we suggest that you use graph paper to measure it. Measure the width and length of your garden at various points and draw an approximation of the shape of your lawn. When you count the number of squares your lawn fills, and "guess-timate" the rest from partially filled squares, you can get a reasonable estimate. When in doubt, round up rather than down.
